Barnaby Joyce, I’m calling you out

The electorate deserves better. That’s the message from New England Independent Adam Blakester, following Friday’s announcement by Barnaby Joyce that he won’t be attending all the “meet the candidate” forums scheduled in the lead-up to the Federal election.

“We all have families, careers and personal lives. If the other seven candidates can make the effort to front the various communities, then why can’t Mr Joyce?

“Does he believe his time is more precious than ours, or is he simply afraid to face the electorate in light of the growing scandals that seem to follow him? It’s especially rich seeing as Mr Joyce is probably the only candidate on a salary at the moment.

“In his statement on Friday he claimed: "I know New England and I know where I need to be”.

“Well I say to Mr Joyce; you need to be at each of these forums. Voters deserve your respect, especially seeing as you have made the time to be wined and dined in a corporate box at the NRL game.

“The role of a Federal member is to represent the views and interests of the electorate. How can you do that properly when you don’t take to the time to hear what voters have to say, and when you won’t make yourself accessible to answer their questions about the future of this electorate” continued Mr Blakester.

Pre-empting any claims that the various candidate forums are a duplication, Mr Blakester is quick to point out that each forum  targets different cities, towns, communities and issues.

“Every town in this electorate has its own unique set of issues and if they have gone to the trouble of setting up a forum, then I’d suggest they have concerns they want answers to.

“If he cares about the business community; issues raised by women or the water woes being experienced by Murrurundi, he’ll stop hiding and face his electorate in an open and transparent way.

“If he fails to do this, then I think voters can assume he either doesn’t care enough, he’s hiding something or is perhaps afraid of being accountable for his poor performance” said Blakester.
